This year is filled with many historic anniversaries, and WURTH USA celebrates its birth by sponsoring the rebirth of two historically important cars: the 1969 Ford Mustang, and the 1969 Aston Martin DBS.
Growing up a European car enthusiast, it was a natural fit to become a WURTH representative, as I had used our products for years both as a hobbyist, and with FIAT Auto USA. All the while, as well, I am a lifelong James Bond fan, so the Aston Martin was in my blood from age 9 when I first saw the film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” at a drive-in with my father, who would whistle “Goldfinger” at home while puttering with his Jaguar in the garage. I was hooked on Bond, and wanted an Aston Martin DBS someday, and now, thanks to the great business of WURTH USA, hard work, savings, and some luck, I now have my dream car, and am in the process of celebrating the 40th Anniversaries of the film “OHMSS” and the 1969 DBS!
The Ford Mustang has also been seen in James Bond films: its first appearance was in “Goldfinger” (1964), a convertible, driven by the ill fated Tilly Masterson, that was cut open by Sean Connery’s DB5. The next film, “Thunderball”(1965), had a lovely powder blue hardtop driven by the villainous Fiona Volpe. In “OHMSS”(1969), Countessa Theresa di Vincenzo, or Tracy, drives a red Cougar convertible, and Bond is in a 1971 Fastback in “Diamonds Are Forever,” executing the now famous two wheeled escape through an alley.
There were only 789 DBS models produced between late 1968 and 1972. This is a handmade ever-so-British Grand Tourer, an elegant gentleman’s car all the way. This car is even rarer than the Goldfinger DB5, the gadget-laden Silver Birch wonder car that put not only the name Aston Martin in every household, but the Corgi die cast company as well. It took over three years just to find a suitable DBS for sale, and networking through the Aston Martin Owner’s Club, or AMOC, paid off, as one day the phone rang rather unexpectedly, and the car that would become my car became available.
DBS #5678 (great chassis number!) was a ONE owner car, and had sat for many years, and needed a full restoration. My vision was to make a James Bond replica car from the film, and this example was a great start. Being a low mileage, one owner car, many hard to find items were complete, and not missing, or improperly repaired, which is a weak point for older cars. Everything was either original, or factory serviced, and I flew to England in May of 2008 to bring my dream car home.
Even with a loving owner, a 40 year old English car driven on English roads has rust issues, and following inactivity for 15 years, there were a host of mechanical problems that led to the need for a total “nut and bolt” restoration.
WURTH products factored heavily in the restoration process. From our wonder chemical “Rustguard,” to our SAE nut and bolt assortments, the products that I sell on a daily basis are also the ones that I use on my own car!
It is my goal to offer to the world what we feel will be the finest DBS, and a homage to the film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” During this year long restoration, the process will be enjoyed as much as the final result. Many customers have rallied support, either helping directly, or providing moral support. WURTH USA staff has been wonderful, sending on samples and small items that I could not find anywhere. It is truly a team effort, and it is the hope that this car will be invited to the 100th Anniversary of Aston Martin, held at the hallowed ground of Newport Pagnell in England next year. Sponsorship will be needed to ship the car to the UK, and the event will be attended by long time Aston enthusiasts Rowan Atkinson, and Prince Charles!
The James Bond producers also will be hosting an event for the new James Bond film, and in attendance will be the star of OHMSS, George Lazenby. It would be lovely to have him arrive in the very car that he drove in the film as James Bond, complete with the sniper rifle prop in the glovebox!
